One of the funniest memories Mr. Flinger and I have about being first time parents, is the time we went to Borders Books with our 5 week old. We had the large diaper bag, the bjorn, the carrier, two blankets, binki, bottles, a lovey and I think, maybe, a baby with us.
People laughed at the amount of stuff we were carrying. We did not.
Over the years, I’ve been known to (let’s say) carry too much?
Now, though, I’m pairing down. Diaper bags are getting smaller (a lot like the cell phone or MP3 player or a my brain capacity or hours of sleep per night). My purse is a wallet on a string. My children, godbless’em, if they piss themselves they are, as the saying goes, “S.O.L.” But at least now I don’t walk around with my shoulders haunched over like a Sherpa.
I wish I could say the same thing about the trunk of my car…

I have to say that the mountains of “Stuff” you have to haul around like a pack mule sucks a major duck. (You HAVE to be prepared, though!!!)
I cried tears of joy when I could carry a real purse again.
Sigh…
My husband was the one who insisted we needed to carry 10 tons of stuff for the baby in the big diaper bag. I finally showed him the merits of the little diaper bag. However I opened my trunk yesterday to stash my groceries and had to shove them between the pack and play and the stroller. I’m not sure how I will handle two kids.
Sounds & looks familiar. Very familiar.
Please tell me you got a new car. No way that much would fit in the back of mine!
Although that said I do use the car asa repository for things I can’t fit in my backpack..blankets, towels, extra clothes, etc
ME TOO.
Today I had to take out our canvas chairs (but kept the umbrella stroller) to make room for the All-Terrain Red Wagon…what we DID NOT use on our walk. It is still out there… and the diaper bag is non-existent anymore and someday my purse will be my stuff only!
That could almost be a picture of my trunk! I know just what you mean…I carried everything from baby nail clippers to infants’ Tylenol! Yeah, like I was going to clip my baby’s nails at the mall or something!
But I could have if I WANTED TO!!!
*giggle*
I now just carry a purse and toss a Pull Up in and maybe a box of raisins, some hand sanitizer, and a travel thing of wipes.
And hey, wait a minute…that’s MY car at this very moment!
ha ha ha ha.. thta looks familiar.. but where are the goldfish?

My son BIT my iPod. Yep. It’s got teethmarks in it! Several other geeks (including a guy at the Apple Store) have told me the same thing “oh you HAVE to save that.” I agree. When it’s obsolete I’m putting it into a scrapbook. I’m not sure how one would stand up to poop however.
My ‘diaper bag’ is my laptop backpack. It’s got USB cables in one pocket and a sippy cup in another. It’s about half and half the amount of geeky tech stuff compared to baby stuff for my son.
I am a sad case, I know.
The car makes me cringe.
Oh we have definitely reduced the amount of stuff we take to go anywhere. Even when we had 3 in diapers we were able to reduce the size of the bag from the first baby days. It is amusing to see the first time parents that have brought the entire house with them for a one-hour outing to Mass or something, where the child is likely to sleep the entire time. I love watching new parents and remembering all of the new experiences.
The back of my car may well contain treasure, there is so much stuff in there.
It is so nice when the kids are old enough you don’t have to drag the entire house out with you for a small trip!
then they just want to bring bigger things with them everywhere they go!
I laugh now thinking how MUCH stuff we were sure we needed, with #1. After #4 was born, I gave up and just started leaving all the crap at OTHER people’s houses ;o)
I’m back to tell you that I still think the back of your car looks like mine…and to say that you’ve been given an award.
Check my blog for details…
If it were my car, you would also see cracker crumbs, animal crackers and juice boxes thrown all over.
there’s nothing quite like the day that you don’t need to bring ANY kid stuff with you. we are so close to that stage. for us we still need a sippy cup and a change of underwear and pants…
I over pack too. But, I have always said, “you never know what is going to happen”. Well, we got stuck on the side of the rode in -10 degree weather and we were waiting for over 1.5 hours for a tow truck, and my husband looked at me and said, “thank god you packed.” I had warmer clothing, my PIS Advanced, three bottles of breast milk and two frozen bags of it, lots of diapers, a blanket for the baby and four changes of clothes. I also had snacks for us and a blanket for us because I am always cold. After that my husband decided that we should have a duffel bag in the car with stuff just in case. LOL.
once the boy child hit 6 months it was bye bye big snoopy diaper bag and hello nice sleek black 1/2 foot long diaper bag. It is so nice not having to carry two 22 lbs things at the same time while trying to hold a two year olds hands.
#1 - LOVE that little dotty bag! Do tell the details!!!!
#2 - I totally feel your pain. Now with 2 in diapers and one lazy mama, I will sometimes totally forget a diaper bag when I run somewhere. “Oh, you need a bottle? Well, I forgot to bring you one…want a french fry? Cappuccino? No? Oh well!”
The more children I had the less I carried around for them. Now? We leave the house with NOTHING except the kids. We even go out of town without changes of clothes—we like to play russian roulette that way. But Ben is finally potty trained. He hasn’t had an accident other than at night in a couple of weeks and I can finally say that we are diaper free.
It’s a wonderful state of being I have to tell you. But if it can’t fit in my purse (when I choose to take my purse with me that is) then it doesn’t need to go. I love that.
OH and I forgot to mention. We are stroller free too—Ben won’t sit in it so I gave it away.
Oh, so what you’re really saying is that the crap got too big to carry in a bag so you graduated to a smaller bag but filled up your trunk, right?
I’ve been looking into merging the diaper bag and my purse. My purse is small - too small to be a diaper bag. My diaper bag is too big to be a purse. Still looking for something in the middle.
Carrie, I (switched? took over?) the mister’s car.
LeanneIAm, I still owe you a meme! I keep thinking about it! Now? An award? “Most likely to never do the damn meme I tagged her for!” Awesome. I always wanted that one. heh.
SisterHoneyBunch Girl, those are in the front seat. If you look closely, I think (I THINK) you can see a dirty diaper that I carted home. If you can’t, scratch and sniff.
Last night Anya slept through the night without a diaper and my first thought upon waking to a dry kid was, “Holy crap, I can buy a new bag.”
Tiny little purse, here I come.
The car, on the other hand…
sigh.
