Our Son

Today we caught a glimpse into our youngest child’s world. While a mother knows many things about the person growing inside of her, like his resting times, his active times,  which body part is poking her ribs, the Dad only hears second hand, “He’s moving! Come here quick!” There are times, I’m sure, that Mr. Flinger feels a little slighted with the experience of growing an actual person. There are times, that is, until I’m puking or swelling, failing diabetes tests or having contractions.  Today, though, he had the chance to peek at his first son, our second child, and it made the entire experience just that much more real and rich and amazing.

Internet? I’m growing an entire human being in my stomach. That. Is. Amazing.

We learned he’s an “active” boy. We learned that he is, in fact, a boy and that’s it’s ok to start sending out those girl clothes after all. We learned he sleeps with his mouth open, that he’s breech still, that his feet are up near his head and his hands often grab his toes. He also sucks the umbilical chord, which I find less than tasty sounding, and laughs when you tickle him. Yes, we saw our son laugh, or at least smile with an open mouth after the technicial rubbed the wand on his back and he jumped. My son is ticklish. My son has the Mr. Flinger nose. My son has fine hair on his head and his daddy’s lips.

Once again, my genes are slackers.

I don’t mind, though. He looks just like his sister did when she was a baby. It’s comforting almost, to see a familiar face. Even if we haven’t seen him in the world yet, we know him. And today? We know him just a little bit more.

That’s amazing. 4D ultrasounds weren’t available when I had my kids so all I got was the 2D version. I’m so jealous. These pictures are awesome. He’s very handsome!

New to your blog…congrats on your handsome baby boy smile

Those new 4d ultrasounds are the most amazing invention ever.

I know when my sons girlfriend had an ultrasound (regular one) at 5 months we could see enough to tell by her facial structure that my granddaughter had her daddys chin. I would’ve loved to have seen a 4d one.

Maybe I’ll get to do so with the newest granddaughter that’s due in August. Her mom is a nurse and I’m afraid that poor baby is going to have an ultrasound concussion her mom pops over to L&D and has them do them all the time.

Anyway, I’ve enjoyed your blog and just wanted to say congrats on that baby boy.

Wow—your little guy at 32 weeks looks like a real baby! We saw the 3-D shots of ours last week during our mid-term ultrasound (21 weeks) and they were ...uh… sort of scary, really. The tech said he doesn’t have enough body fat yet to really look like a baby. Right now he looks like a cross between a large malformed eggplant and an alien. But we love him anyway. smile

Congratulations on your little cute guy!

oh my goodness—just gorgeous!  I’m so jealous that you have those super high tech ultrasounds.  We didn’t have access to them with my pregnancies.  What a thrill to really see your child’s face while he’s growing inside you!

    J04/18/2007

Fabulous!  One of my infant development profs once told us that babies were pre-disposed to look like their fathers at first in order to encourage the father to take care of the mother and baby.

Thank you everyone. It’s so fun to share the experience. I’ve watched the video (Yes! there is VIDEO!) about six times and we just had it done yesterday.

oh, yes, don’t worry, the video will be posted. At least a short clip will. I mean, why hog all the fun here? grin

We got them done at http://www.babypicturesultrasound.com/

We paid for them, it’s not covered with insurance, but honestly? It’s totally worth it to us. Totally.

  • Elizabeth
    J04/19/2007

That is the most amazing thing I have ever seen! You know, when you’re pregnant, you try to picture what the baby looks like in there, but most people never get to. It really drives home the realization that you are making a PERSON, you know?

  • Mrs. Flinger
    J04/19/2007

Elizabeth, that’s exactly what I keep saying, “no wonder my belly is so big, there’s a WHOLE PERSON in there!” It makes the “I can’t see my hayhay” and “I can’t reach my feet” and “I have to pee… again…” a little less annoying. ‘Cause I feel so much more connected now that I see his face. Not that I didn’t love him before, but now? He’s real.

And seriously, y’all. You’re making me tear up. Thank you for your wonderful excitement.

    J04/19/2007

  • Monica
    J04/19/2007

Sorry, can’t resist the assvice - chiropractors can be great in turning breech babies once you are a little further along unless of course you are having a c-section and then I guess it doesn’t matter. I always thought they were quacks but one really came to my rescue when I was pregnant. I walked and slept so much better once I started seeing him. My health insurance paid for it too!

    Those pictures are incredible!!!

I’m so glad things are progressing well… you are in the final stretch (but this helps ease the wait)!!!!
