Mrs. Flinger: Bites

Mrs. Flinger

Page 31 and it’s already changed my life

Nov, 21, 2009 -- By: Mrs. Flinger

A good friend of mine, Laura, is light years ahead of me in the hippie eating. She’s quietly encouraged my inner drive for clean food for about four years. FOUR YEARS. The woman is patient.

She told me to read the book In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto and I finally did. She told me it would change my life. And it already has. On page 31.

I’ve been interested in nutrition science since I was 15 years old. I planned on getting a Masters in Nutrition Sciences so I focused on Exercise and Sports Science with a strong human chemistry minor. I set myself up to be a dietitian. I did this clear up until graduation at which time I got frustrated with the science of food and the constant state of turmoil.

This book has brought back my love of nutrition from a new, fresh, holistic view.

I believe food can be yummy. I believe food should not come from a box. Or a can. Or a package. I do not live by this thought, not as of yet, but I hope to. Baby step in to the garden. Baby step in to fresh bread. Baby step in to fresh milk, meat, cheese. I want to share my baby steps with you here in the off chance you’re taking them as well. We can baby step together to eating like our grandparents did before imitation foods came out in the late thirties.

Like we were meant to it. .... Food.

You have always been on the right track which has always impressed us.

Oh yes, it is amazing what is out there and the biggest problem is that our society has turned the decision of what to purchase to their children. Now that I teach the Health and Nutrition class at the University, we look closely at the consumers, school children eating their lunch, mall shoppers, and gym participants. Supply vs. Demand with sugar, carbs, and fat winning every time.

So sad for our children as a nation.

yay! I’m famous! raspberry

My apologies to the people who click that link; my family website is heavily guarded for privacy! At some point when I have my act together (hahaha - when would that be, when the current in-utero child is 3??), I will have a food blog with all my fun recipes and philosophies. Until then, maybe I’ll give Mrs. Flinger some blog fodder for Clean Bites! :D

I think I’m there with you.  While I can’t say I eat “clean” all of the time, I think overall I probably eat much cleaner than I did as a child or young adult.  Much of this is due to working at Whole Foods and having access to some wonderful food and also a love for cooking.  Maybe I could contribute recipes?

I am absolutely loving this and will be following along.  I am totally on board with your effort.

I was just talking to Bear’s OTs about In Defense of Food. It is a remarkable book and when I read it last year, it reinforced my decision to stay away from processed food.

I’m glad you are taking baby steps. Changing eating habits is like quitting smoking, cold turkey rarely works.

About

Mom of two, Community Architect at EllisLab. I'm learning to eat clean after being diagnosed with celiac sensitivity. Recently took a short trip to The Netherlands. I make a very bad drunk. I am of no particular religion. Raising a 5yr old daughter, a 3yr old son, my claim of fame is being the girl Ree thought was pregnant, and also that time I met Bella Karoli. But mostly the belly thing. (Read the FAQ...).

Hai! 14 here now

I've been dropping carefully placed f-bombs on the Internet since 2003. I'm also very sarcastic and somewhat prone to exaggeration. Stay and I'll give you a beer. Subscribe and I'll do a very clothed, very bad (ala: Thirty Rock) table dance for you. Tempting, eh?
